ASCENSION PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO RESUME NORMAL OPERATIONS ON FRIDAY AUG. 28, 2020

ASCENSION PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO RESUME NORMAL OPERATIONS ON FRIDAY AUG. 28, 2020

Thursday, August 27, 2020 at 4:00 p.m.

Ascension Public Schools will resume normal operations on Friday, Aug. 28, 2020, following closures from Hurricanes Marco and Laura this week.

Students will return to school as originally scheduled. That means all primary students will return to school, and middle and high school students on an alternating schedule should attend in person if they are in the first group, usually identified as “A” group for most schools. The second “B” group will remain virtual on Friday.

District staff spent much of today checking on school campuses, testing our infrastructure, and consulting with emergency officials. We are fortunate that Ascension Parish received very little damage from Hurricane Laura, but we continue to keep our neighbors to the west in our prayers. We will be looking at ways we can assist in their recovery in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

As always, for official decisions regarding school closures, please visit the district website, www.apsb.org.

Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at 3:30 p.m.

Students in Ascension Public Schools will continue learning remotely while all schools and offices remain closed on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020, due to Hurricane Laura.

Much like today, students will receive instructions from their schools and teachers regarding learning responsibilities that could include logging in online at specified class times or completing assignments on their own time.

There is a possibility that scattered power outages in the area could impact the ability of students to connect with teachers online. If that happens, students should let their teachers know when they are able, and they will not be held accountable. Rest assured, we will work with families that have challenges with remote learning. It would be easy to completely cancel all learning tomorrow. However, we feel it is in the best interests of our students to engage in ongoing instruction if we are able to do so.

Please keep our neighbors to the west in your thoughts and prayers as they face an unprecedented storm this evening. Although we will make decisions one day at a time, our goal is to resume normal operations on Friday, Aug. 28, 2020. A final decision about Friday will be communicated by the end of the day on Thursday after assessing impacts to our area by Hurricane Laura.

Tuesday August 25, 2020 at 4:50 p.m.

Students in Ascension Public Schools will re-engage in learning remotely while all schools and offices remain closed on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020, due to Hurricane Laura.

Although projections for Hurricane Laura have shifted the path toward the Texas state line, the threat remains for severe weather in our area. While tomorrow morning will likely be safe, conditions after lunch and through the afternoon could bring tropical storm force winds, creating hazardous driving conditions during dismissal times. After consulting with emergency officials, the district believes the safest course of action is to engage students in online learning from the safety of their homes.

Remote learning approaches may be different at each grade level, so students will receive specific instructions from their schools and teachers regarding learning from home. Students in the Blended Learning Program, Alternative Learning Program, and Ascension Pathways Program will receive instructions from APPLe Digital Academy. Please note, attendance will be taken, and, as always, should students be unable to participate due to illness, they should follow the normal process for receiving an excused absence. In the event of a power or Internet outage, adjustments will be made.

Employees should follow instructions from their supervisors regarding work responsibilities.

Due to the unpredictability of this weather, the district will monitor the forecasts and make decisions about closures one day at a time. Our goal is to make an announcement each evening for the following day. We appreciate your patience as student and staff safety is our first priority.

Sunday, August 23rd, 2020 at 11 a.m.

All schools and offices of Ascension Public Schools will close Monday, Aug. 24, 2020 and Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020 due to the projected impacts of Tropical Storm Marco. These closures include the suspension of all instructional services, both in-person and online, so that staff and families can prepare for and respond to storm impacts. Twelve-month employees will remain on call during the closures.

District personnel are working closely with local and state emergency officials to monitor the path of Marco as well as the predicted path of Tropical Storm Laura. A decision on additional school closures will be made after monitoring the path of Tropical Storm Laura on Monday and Tuesday and consulting with emergency officials.
